For the past few weeks, Amarillo has been operating on a voluntary water conservation plan, asking residents to water accordingly based on their address. Even number addresses were to water Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Odd numbered addresses the other other days, excluding Saturday during which the City asked that no one water that day.
Assistant City Manager Donny Hooper said the strong level of cooperation exhibited by residents and businesses made the difference.
At 60 percent and dropping when the City asked for the voluntary watering, the water reservoir has recovered to 80 percent.
Amarillo and the Panhandle are in the midst of one of the hottest and driest summers in recent memory.
